In 2002 or 2003 I started freelancing for the Portland Mercury, a weekly newspaper in Portland, Oregon. A year or two after that, I tricked them into hiring me as their film editor. I’m now a senior editor at the Mercury, and when I’m not writing and editing for the paper, I also blog pretty regularly over at the Mercury’s blog, Blogtown.
In addition to writing and editing film pieces for the Mercury, I’ve also been known to write about books, comics, videogames, and a bunch of other random stuff. Some purported highlights: Alan Moore, Dave Eggers, Brian K. Vaughan, Sasquatch, Batman, Michael Bay, Miami Vice, John Hodgman, hammered shit, Serenity, polar bears, Ragnarök.
Though I don’t do much freelance feature writing anymore, in the past I’ve written a piece or two for publications whose titles contain neither the words “Portland” nor “Mercury,” such as the now-defunct Electronic Gaming Monthly.
Also, it just occurred to me that I might have only decided to go into newspaperin’ because Robert Redford looked like a badass doing it in All the President’s Men. Which is as good a reason as any, I suppose.
